Resume distribution services have popped up over the past few years and some job searchers have asked me about whether or not they are worth using.

Essentially, you pay the company a fee and they will send your resume to hundreds if not thousands of employers and recruiters. The idea is that they put your resume in front of numerous people who may be interested in speaking with you regarding employment.

The apparent benefit to you is that it would take far too long for you to blast your resume out to thousands of people and that a resume distribution service can do it far quicker than you could.

Is a resume distribution service worth using?

Let's put it this way: if you believe in the old adage that if you throw enough you-know-what against a wall, something is bound to stick.....then perhaps using a resume distribution service makes sense to you.

That's basically what this sort of service does.

The underlying principle seems to be that if you float your resume past enough people, someone is bound to want to hire you!

If you were looking for a date, would you email everyone in your email contacts list asking them if they know anyone you could go out with?

That would smack of desperation, wouldn't it?

Probably wouldn't work either.

Using a resume distribution service might sound like something that makes sense in theory but if you think about it, it's basically just a form of legal spamming.

They email your resume to a group of people you don't know and who don't know you and the idea that they will spend time to read over each resume they receive hoping to find a good one is unrealistic.

As a recruiter, whenever I receive a resume from someone that I know has been emailed to numerous other recruiters, I usually glance at the resume quickly and then delete it.

If a resume has been sent to hundreds or thousands of other people, why would I bother trying to help this person with their job search when I'd be competing with all the other people who also have their resume?

A recruiter who largely relies on resume distribution services to find job candidates is probably not a very good recruiter. And an employer who relies on such a service to find staff is probably looking for staff on a regular basis and is really just looking for warm bodies to fill some seats.

Your resume has value. By allowing a company to send it off to thousands of people generically, you simply reduce the value of your resume by using a method that will most likely yield low results.

A targeted job search that uses your resume for specific job opportunities that ideally gets sent to a specific person is your best long-term plan.

Should You Use Resume Distribution Services To Get Sales Jobs?

The best targets for a professional sales job search will always be the people who make final hiring decisions, i.e., the direct supervising sales managers. The further removed the targets are from the sales managers such as recruiters, headhunters and human resources staff, the more distant targets become for individuals hoping to get corporate sales jobs.

There are numerous resume distribution services to shotgun resumes to all sorts of recruiters, human resources people and other targets that are distant from the sales managers. These distribution services try to convince their clients that having their resumes blasted all over online is a step in the right direction towards landing professional sales positions.

The real question is whether candidates are really better off by using such resume distribution services. Let's put it this way, the resume distribution services are available to anyone who is willing to pay whether they have the job qualifications or not. Clients using these services will be just like all others who pay to get their resumes sent out there and there will be lots of folks in the same boat. It's an easy way to get resumes out and as a result, everyone will be doing the same thing.

Rather than separating oneself from the rest of the crowd as one should be doing for an effective job hunt, one will just be caught in the masses of all others who are also getting their resumes distributed in the same way. The recipients of these resumes, who are usually not the sales managers, will still get flooded with piles and piles of resumes.

We all know that personal referrals to sales managers and face to face meetings with them will always get oneself way ahead of the pack. Will resume distribution services be able to offer this route for their customers in order to make them really stand out in front of the crowd? Of course not. Resume distribution services do not really put candidates much further ahead. Sure it's easy to just pay to have your resume sent out but are they being put in front of the best people who are capable of making the final hiring decisions? Again, no. Are such services able to put your resume ahead in front of all their other paying customers? Definitely not!

Getting a resume and one's face in front of the best targets in a corporate sales job hunt takes a lot of work and can't be simply bought like resume distribution services would have you believe. One must get out there in front of the right industry people to make the best unforgettable personal impressions in order to land the best sales jobs. It is a lot of work but then again, that's what professional sales people do anyway.

Does Mass Resume Distribution Really Work?

Yes the resumes get there. Is it worth it though? In my experiment using a professional writer's resume I got numerous requests from life insurance companies, financing companies, mortgage companies, investment companies, credit card processing, advertising and many other 100% commission sales jobs. During a recession these are both the companies with the highest turnover and the most desperate need. They pay recruiters the higher commissions. I got zero writers job interviews how interesting. Yet, one cover letter sent to company directly that wasn't hiring, resulted in an instant request for an interview even without any resume. Thank you Yellow Pages.

Resume distribution services are another quick way to make a buck off unknowing job hunters. Unfortunately, the only way this can work is to distribute one generic resume many times. You can do this for free by posting your resume online then making any change in it and posting it again. Each time you do this it will be listed again as a new resume at no cost. Many job posting services even charge for preferred resume positioning. What an outrage! This company also posts business opportunities as if they were real jobs. The problem with these giant corporations is they are heartless. Anyone without a job needs real honest help in the midst of this recession.

Forget about a generic resume and cover letter distribution. This might work for certain professions where there is a shortage of talent like in nursing. But for the vast majority of job hunters you are simply making your employers/recruiters job harder. Now they have a stack of > 200 vs. 100 to filter through 90% are deleted. In this recession since the costs are identical: Who would you rather employ a heartless big corporation from a foreign land or a local professional resume writer who will contribute to your success and the local economy in return?

Keys to success: Professionally written, edited and proofread resumes & cover letters that are customized to your targeted position and employer. These automated services prey on the naive, and create more spam avoid them. If English is not your native tongue or strength you can really use the specialized help a professional writer, editor and proofreader will provide. Keep in mind most professional resume writers have to use an editor/proofreader because errors are not acceptable on critical business documents like resumes, cover letters, reference letters, follow up letters and correspondence.

Time is money. The sad thing about these automated generic services is while they are not working for you, they cost you good money. Your savings account is being depleted, your health & dental insurance will lapse, and you will be offered a lower salary with a generic resume. Please don't fall for these cheap automated services as they cost you more than any reasonable resume writer in many ways. Do they advertise the fact that you will still be doing all the typing?

Here is an example to think about: While you are not earning a typical $750 per week you are forced to withdraw funds from you savings account or even worse your retirement account. So each week that goes by $750 lost by not working combined with $750 withdrawn from your savings account totals to a $1500 loss each week or $6000 per month. That is a huge swing in your financial present and future. Cobra Health insurance is not even included.

Employers are primarily concerned with: Relevant experience, Career Accomplishments and your previous experience. But it must be delivered in a high quality customized resume and cover letter to earn you an interview verses the massive competition for the same job. If you were a professional writer would you send the same resume to the Wall Street Journal and Gourmet Magazine? Absolutely not and the cover letter would be entirely different too.

Thankfully, most professionals that want to work still have the common sense to pay a good resume writer. And every good writer has an editor and proofreader. I don't think this will change anytime soon. The bottom line is it is hard work that requires know how and expertise. Now that you have the rest of the story, make your own decision based on common sense. But remember you will either be penalized or rewarded based on your decision. I have listened to lots of feedback from clients over the years so I feel it is my duty to pass this truth on.
